Altered Books - Morning/Afternoon

What are altered books? In the words of artist Carol Owen ‘I'm often asked to describe altered books to people who are unfamiliar with them. I try to explain it this way: I start with an old, unloved book and transform it with paint, photos, and other embellishments. The end result is a book that has become a work of art, with pockets, niches, and secret compartments, enticing the viewer to keep turning pages.’ Sign up for 1 or both sessions!

Friendship Bracelets

Originally, these colorful bands were invented by Indians in Central and South America. According to tradition, you tie a bracelet onto the wrist of a friend who may wish for something at that moment. The bracelet should be worn until it is totally worn out and falls off by itself, at which moment the wish is supposed to come true.
Join this group with Ms. Grosart and learn to make these bracelets for the first time, or rejuvenate your skills from childhood. Or maybe you've been making them for years and just want to join in to make more! There will be instruction for beginners, and more advanced patterns for the more experienced. It'll be fun!

Jam Session with Rich Ortiz - Afternoon

Sign up for this workshop ONLY with permission from Mr. Masterson.

Rich Ortiz's style is truly his own and his music is his soul. Ortiz, never a wallflower, believes he is the product of his family's cultural diversity and strengths. Since the age of 17, he's focused all of his talents and time on his acoustic solo act, if you can call it that. Rich plays guitar, harmonica, and pedal bass (with his feet), and he turns heads with his vocals! He has opened shows for Ludacris, Hoobastank, Jeffrey Gaines, Ryan Montbleau Band, The Wood Brothers, Tea Leaf Green, Kracker, Merl Saunders, Melvin Seals, Jim Weider, and the Drifters.

Inspired by artists like Jim Croce, James Taylor, The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, and Willie Nelson, he says "I feel I have to change every gig around in order to grow as a musician." He plays six- and twelve-string acoustic guitar and chooses not to cultivate a target audience. He thinks "ideally the feeling of people who leave the room or listen to your CD should be one of making someone's day. What comes out of your tongue says a lot about your soul."

Check out Rich Ortiz' music here.

In 2006, Ortiz released his long awaited debut album, "Let It Be Life". Recorded with the help of Grammy winning producer, John Seymour, the album features live, unedited studio recordings of all original works. Soon after its release, "Let It Be Life" was listed as one of the Top-40 selling Funk/Blues albums on CD Baby, the #1 online record store for independent music.

In 2010, Ortiz released his sophomore album, "Face of a Lion", which features guest musician Kofi Burbridge (Derek Trucks Band).

As his passion for life grows stronger, so does the energy in his music. Rich is a truly rare, authentic talent.

Poetry - Morning/Afternoon

“Dead Poets Society Revisited” or
“Poetry Writing 1A: How to Woo that Significant Other with Words that May/May Not Rhyme”

In the words of Robin Williams in his role a Mr. John Keating in the film Dead Poets Society:

“We don't read and write poetry because it's cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for. To quote from Whitman, "O me! O life!... of the questions of these recurring; of the endless trains of the faithless... of cities filled with the foolish; what good amid these, O me, O life?" Answer. That you are here - that life exists, and identity; that the powerful play goes on and you may contribute a verse. That the powerful play *goes on* and you may contribute a verse. What will your verse be?”

This NHS Arts Day Workshop will meet in Lane 202 and will require members of the human race, their iPads, and an open mind as they read, recite, listen, write, and feel poetry. After which we may need several professional police officers and therapists to fend off and counsel those who did not participate in this workshop yet were inevitably affected by it.

Self-Portraits in the Style of Frida Kahlo

Kahlo's "Self Portrait with Monkey"
About her own work, Frida Kahlo said, “I never paint dreams or nightmares. I paint my own reality.” In one of her famous self-portraits, Kahlo has a cat perched on one shoulder and a monkey on the other, with insect-like flowers flying around her head. While this “reality” is not what others may have seen when looking at her, this is the world that she experienced and chose to represent in her painting. Like Kahlo, participants in this workshop will combine the realistic with the symbolic to make portraits that show their individual experience and identity. We will go over painting basics such as mixing color, facial proportions and creating a background and foreground, and will look at self-portrait examples by Kahlo and others for inspiration.

Special Effects Make Up - Morning/Afternoon

In this workshop, learn how to create special effects with stage make-up. The emphasis this year will be on creating the illusion of gross and disgusting wounds and bruises.

On stage, one’s features must be clearly visible to everyone sitting in the theater, even the people in the very back row. Many people don’t know the correct technique to apply make-up that will look good from 30 feet away, especially when it comes to exaggerated facial features.

Both male and female actors use basic stage make-up techniques to enhance their natural features, correct or diminish other features, and change their appearance. Often, a role calls for “character” makeup, such as stylized fairies, zombies, animals, or a look of old age. Makeup can accomplish all of these looks and many more.

You will need a T shirt you don’t mind getting dirty, and a great sense of humor.
